There's a reason why we need a guide...

MD80 and Md88 were pretty easy to id

however, CNN still thinks it's a 32o-200, and thinks a 320 is a 777

You mean DC-9/MD-80/MD-95/717/ARJ21? Personally I find them pretty hard to tell apart from one another. And honestly, you could throw a Fokker 100 in there, and I’d probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference either.

I’m flying on a new type (to me) next week. Flying is usually the only part of business travel I enjoy, so I’m looking forward to giving a CRJ-100 derivative a try.

Yes, I don't know why but they always caught my eye, I thought (15 years old) that they looked much sleeker than the other planes

In order starting from the left top:

Boeing 777

A380

Embraer

Concorde

A320/319

Embraer Turboprop

Dassault Mirage

Mig 17/19 or a Yak 30. I’d need to look at it frontally

F-15

PAK FA or F-35

MiG 29

Lysander

PO2 or a gladiator

I’m off significantly, but JU87 Stuka

Classic 1960s era Piper

IDK

The Ilyushin that NK uses as a paratrooper plane.

But can you tell an MD-88 from an MD-90?

For those plane spotters out there, here’s a guide to identify the four different significant versions of the DC-9 series:

DC-9: Short fuselage, no strakes under the cockpit, pointy tail. (The last DC-9 variant, the DC-9-50, was equipped with strakes, but it retained the cone-shaped tail.)

MD-80 series: Longer fuselage, strakes under the cockpit, pinch tail, skinny engines.

MD-90 series: Longer fuselage, strakes under the cockpit, pinch tail, fat engines.

B717: Shorter body, no strakes under the cockpit, pinch tail, fat engines.

Basically, you can tell the DC-9-10/20/30/40 from the B717 by the tail cone, and the MD-80 series from the MD-90 series by the size of the engines.

They are very similar indeed, but the Fokker 100 has a characteristic dorsal extension at the base of the vertical stabilizer. The MDD planes have a smooth, curved transition to the stabilizer. The Fokker also has wing fences and an air brake in the tail. The MDD has neither of these.

Plane spotting, and aviation photography , are my big hobby. Since form follows function, it can get very difficult to tell some apart. The new winglets on the A320 series really muddy the waters when compared to the B737 (though the real ID spot is the difference in the nose); the Embraer ERJ series can be difficult to tell from the Canadair CRJ series (the Embraer is skinnier, and has a pointier nose); and it’s pretty much impossible to differentiate the different Embraer E Series jets. Sometimes I’ve just got to look up the registration to be sure.

to tell apart the 717 i’ve always just looked at the rear housing of the engine, which has a very distinguishable part different from the rest of the MDs that use a shiny metal housing

TBH, I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a 717. I’d have to look into it, but it looks like the 717 does not have the clamshell thrust reversers at the back of the engine.

717 are generally shorter and quieter than most of the MD-DC’s. i know this because MD’s are the loudest things taking off living near jfk

$10 says at least one CNN employee bookmarked this page for the next time they’ve got to have wall-to-wall coverage of a plane-related incident.
